MTV
I talked about before the MTV generation with my father, and I asked some questions.
1. Me "How did they listen the mosic?"
He "In that time, we had the TV program named "The best 10". So people watched it, and listened"
2. Me "Where did they find out about new artist?"
He" We found from same TV program with previous question.
3. Me "what was their image of the musician? So, you found artists from TV program. Imagine if you had never seen the artist, but you know his music. For example, the first time for you to listen to the music of Mike or Michael Jackson, what is your his image?"
He "Umm.. I don't know...but I imagine he was big."
Me "Ok"
4. Me " do you remember the first time they watched music on TV?"
He "Umm.. In that time "Pink Lady" and "Candies" we're very popular in Japan."
Me " So what did you think about them when you watched them the first time?"
He "Umm...in that time I was young..."
Me " So you don't remember?
He " Yes..."
5. Me " How did you choose what music you wanted to listen to?"
He " If I had felt good when I listened some music, I would have listened many times."
Me " Just feeling?"
He " Yes!!"
Me" What were some of your favorite musician?"
He "Umm... Then I liked 'Pink lady'"
Me " did you like them? I didn't know that lol"
He " because they were idol!! And I liked "'Southern All Stars'"
Me "Ok imagine, if you had not TV, did you know what they look like?"
He "I didn't know that."
Me " How did you know that?
He " Then we have only TV to know their appearance."
Me "Ok.Do you think the looks of an artist is important ?"
He " Yes, I think so"
Me " Why?"
He " because they were idol."
Me " But Southern all stars' are not idol. Want do you think about them?"
He "Umm...I don't think it is important"
Me " But you said it is important for you the looks of artist, what is the difference between ' Pink lady' and 'Southern all stars'?"
He " Umm...only idols's looks were important for me."
Me "How did artists become popular when you were young?"
He "In that time, the way of to be popular is only the TV program named 'The best 10'. So we listened it, and recorded these songs of artists using Boom box"
Me " Ok. Next question, what are differences you have noticed from early MTV and today's videos?"
He " I think they are not differences, because then Michel Jackson was very famous and his MTV was similar with today's videos."
Me "Ok."
